Painted faux granite countertops! Master Bathroom transformation continues

I Painted my countertops and lived to tell the tale ;)

Well first a quick apology for the LONG delay from the last post to this one! I had grand plans to blog while on our relaxing TN cabin in the mountains vacation,,,I did not however take into account that my computer wouldn't hold the connection to their internet long enough to even check facebook!!

I have seen quite a few painted countertop tutorials online and decided to try to tackle this project in our master bathroom.

Our countertops started out as basic builder sink/counter faux marble that seems to be ever so popular in these parts.

But ended up looking like this:

No really!! That's my actual painted counter top

I started by covering them with Kilz primer

This wasn't too scary because it didn't change the look all that much.

And then came the scary

You may want to cover your eyes if you frighten easily

No, really, cover up them eyes, maybe just peek through a few..

Using a sea sponge I dabbed on my first color, at this point I almost cried.

I thought I royally messed up trying this.

They looked absolutely horrid.

Hey I warned you :)

It's going to get worst before it gets better...

Now I know I warned you at the beginning, that was really just a courtesy to prepare you for the next picture so if you get even a wee bit squeamish at the sight of absolute ugliness, please scroll fast LOL

Uh, yeah, not much I can say, it was U-G-L-Y

I had to force the hubby to stay out for fear he'd run away and never return.

But I was not about to let these countertops beat me, oh no!! I was going to forge on and just keep on adding colors.

It really couldn't get worst

Right? I mean RIGHT?

Alas, my heartrate was starting to come down.

Adding the metallic paint seemed to help calm it down, but still wasn't 'there' yet

Went over with the lightest color to tone it all down

That's what I'm talking about!!

The hubby's side

Now to topcoat.
I used Envirotex Lite
Purchased at Michaels with 50% off coupons (used 2 boxes)

It's sooooo shiny!!!
And you can see I may have overdone it on the sparkles. Not so obvious in real life.
Thank goodness ;)

Here you can see how I covered up the cabinets to protect from the topcoat, not the easiest material to work with but definitely do-able even for a novice like me.

A close up of the 'granite' look

Not bad for about 36 bucks of material eh?

I'll admit the first, second and even third coat I sponged on had me a bit terrifed, I thought I had made a HUGE mistake taking this on but the end result is totally worth those gray hairs I grew freaking out stressing about it ;)

A quick look at what it looked like when we moved in

And after painting...

Bought new cabinet hardware and that made a huge impact as well for low cost.

I love how it turned out and can't wait to share the next project I tackled in here.

  2. That takes great faith and guts. I might have thrown in the towel, literally, covered with something to remove the paint, after the first step. This is a good lesson for all of us. I have seen a lot of people on DIY blogs using the kits sold for this purpose. Did you purchase the paint layers separately? What colors and brand did you use.

    1. Oh yes I completely forgot to cover what products I used for the painting process. After the primer coat I used a sea sponge and those 1.00 craft paints from Americana. I used browns, greys a metallic gold and black then covered it all back up with an off white color. Final coat was the envirotex lite topcoat.
If you want the exact colors I can definitely give them to you too, just let me know or shoot me an email at monroevg9@yahoo.com

    2. We're planning on doing the same thing to our awful laminate countertops and this color is exactly what I had in mind! Would you mind emailing me the colors you used? Also, what size of the Envirotex did you get? Email: mandalay_415@yahoo.com

    4. I love it... If you don't mind could you email me the exact colors also, and did you use actual glitter or just the metallic gold paint? .. Thanks so much.. dballard@acsal.com

  3. Doing it yourself turned out to be a great idea! It actually looked like it was professionally done, though I have to say, you really have a lot of courage in doing that. Thumbs up to that! Some people have a lot of renovation ideas for their bathroom, but would end up asking professionals to do it for them for fear of not doing it well.

  4. I lovea the outcome! I so want to do this on my powder room. The colors would be perfect. I will email you shortly to see if you can share the actual colors you used. Congrats and thank you for sharing!

  6. Now that’s much better. I love it that way! It’s lighter, which makes it easier for you to spot dirt. Dark colored countertops are quite hard to clean because you don’t know where the dirt is. But with this, you can remove the dirt right away without hassle.

  8. When did u put on the glitter?!? And what kind?? I'm about to try this in my kitchen and I'm a little terrified!!!

  9. Do you have any words of wisdom for applying to top coat of envirotex? It's a little intimidating to me!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm so glad you included pictures of the process. Those first few are enough to make anyone sprout a few grays! Turned out great. I'm giving this a try, but can't seem to get the colors the way I would like them. What are the names of the colors you used? Thanks!

  11. I love it. We just bought 80's style home and this will save a ton on my kitchen reno... how durable is the top coat? Does it say how long the finish should last? Thanks!

  12. That's such a wonderful creation, Danielle. I must say that you won't get the result that you wanted at the first coat. It would take a lot of patience and effort for you to achieve the beauty that you want to attain. Anyway, job well done!

  14. I realize this is an older post, but I found this through google, this came out amazing! Congratulations! Did you let each coat of sponge painting dry before moving onto the next? Any tips for the envirotex? Did you do any veining? When and how did you add the glitter? I look forward to seeing a reply from you!

    1. Granite has been utilized in the past to create ancient cities and historic buildings. it'd be a good plan if you utilize an expert contractor to put in and seal the granite countertops. several home improvement stores and on-line stores sell granite countertops. each of them supply deals that may facilitate cut prices of your granite countertops.

    2. I needed to redecorate my kitchen and bathroom on a shoe string budget and champagne taste, I follow "Love it or List it" on channel 112 dish and home buyers each night and I found the DIY ad about home improvement for people that have fixed incomes, I can't tell you the great results that turned out. I needed granite but It's to costly so I gave up on it, until I start surfing the internet for DIY sights for "faux granite" and I got this done in several nights and in a couple of days and it is just as the granite I longed for. It is so good but I plan other projects, can't tell you the difference it is great made it all loo lie another home.

    1. You can do it yourself, you don't need a contractor! it's not hard, just paint the base, let it dry put on the granite paint, let it dry 224 hours then put on another coat and sand it 80 gauge sand paper in a circular pattern until it is smooth, then put on the Polyvinyl Chloride or latex gloss let it dry 24 hours and putting it on until you get the shine you need and let it dry 24 hour between each coat then don't set anything on it for 7 days and never anything hot use a trivet. Then your all set. But if you need a different color then black granite, you need to use three different shades it is a little more activity putting different blotches on the counter starting from darkest, medium to light, their is no right or special pattern you have to use, just be sure to put them all on as wet at The same time as blotches for the marble style. Let it dry 24 hours, sand it until it is smooth, repeat the pattern as it drys and do it too more times until it all covered, dry and sand vacuum off the dust after sanding using 120g sand paper, clean it off or vacuum, run your hand over it to be sure it is all smooth then put on Polyvinyl Chloride or latex until it is the shine you lie. let it dry for 24 hour after each coat and only roll on the Polyvinyl Chloride or latex on the roller in one direction and don't press hard onthe roller or it leaves brush prints. Hope this helps.

Your writing was so interesting. That granite worktops looked actually horrible at the initial stage, thank God you had another idea in your mind. The shimmer is perfectly put and I love the kind of look it gives. Although these days I like dark coloured more but with the shimmer I can go with soft colours yeah? Great job buddy!

  26. What kind of paint did you use? My mom and I just did the counters in her basement and they turned out pretty good. I want to do my boyfriend's kitchen next but it's going to take a lot of convincing so I want to make sure I know what I'm talking about when I try to talk him into it? My mom just bought some countertop paint at home depot for the base and then we used acrylic paint from michaels to sponge and it worked pretty well. Was just curious what other info you could share??

  38. hi! great job! just curious how the envirotex epoxy did along the inner edge of the sink bowl? I have the same type of sink, but I am hesitant to take the stopper out of the sink. Wondering if there was a way around that? it looks like you didn't pour epoxy into the actual sink bowl, does it leave a rough edge?

  42. A-Mazing! I'm in the process of doing this to my fireplace mantel and surround. It's natural stone, but it was painted red, then another coat of white...and I thought I was going to have to tear the whole thing out and spend $3000 on a new stone hearth. BUT, the granite paint is amazing. You have given me courage to keep working on it to get the effect I want. The first try with 3 colors over black doesn't look that convincing, so I'm going to get one more color and I'm going to add metal flakes when I do the top coat. I'm using satin polyurethane since it's a rough stone finish rather than a smooth countertop. Thank you for your stunning example!

After the groundwork coat I utilized an ocean wipe and those 1.00 specialty paints from Americana. I utilized tans, grays a metallic gold and dark then concealed it all back with a grayish shading. Last coat was the envirotex lite topcoat. Granite Countertops Lynnwood
